Riding the coattails of The Carnival of Carnage, Halloween Horror Nights™ needed a new icon that could harness intellectual properties without interfearing. Someone who was infamous, a tale almost every school child is told to never say in the mirror – Bloody Mary. Universal wrote a complete backstory for Dr. Mary Agana, and her descent into madness and eventual supernatural realm. The park was seperated into each of her "mirror realms", which the interactive website explained and allowed you to explore. As the event got closer and closer, the website would transport you from Dr. Agana's diary pages to smashing through the mirror itself.

With an engaging online interactive build-up, the story of Dr. Mary Agana helped to build my excitement for my first return to HHN since 2000. I still to this day am not sure why I didn't go during the years in between. Perhaps my scheduled visits to Florida were timed out wrong or maybe I just never got a chance to look into the mirror and speak Bloody Mary's name. Either way, it proved to be a fantastic year to make my triumphant return because this year was filled with a great collection of houses and scarezones. Of particular note, the still reigning single scariest scene in any house from my 12 different years of visiting in Dead Exposure. Although the strobe effect of "camera flashes" did a lot of the heavy lifting in creating a scary experience throughout the house, the finale scene filled with some moving and some non-moving zombies closing in on you closer and closer with each flash from blinding darkness to brief moment of light proved to be one of the most terrifying created. Other areas of note include the flying monkeys of Oz bungee-flying between the top of buildings in the "Path of the Wicked" scare zone, the amazingly detailed facade of "Interstellar Terror" that had you walking up the space ramp of a full scale space ship, and the literal Tongue-In-Cheek Alice eating the White Rabbit moment in "Fractured Tales" Overall, this year was fantastic and as I Reflect on it, I still find myself filled with Fear and Bloody Delight.
FIRST YEAR I EVER ATTENDED! Got me addicted, I would say this was the last year HHN diehard fans got their event to themselves before the GP flooded the gates! We did one night of the event with no FP or RIP and hit all houses at least twice, all of the shows, ate and people watched with time to spare. DEAD Exposure is still my GOAT because it was my first HHN house.
I really need to figure out how people can do this all in one night without a tour or Express Pass. Granted the event is bigger now and I don’t go nearly enough to get as much of a lay of the land as I would like but… any tips? Can’t hurt to ask.
