Though the Los Angeles Times heralded this year as Universal Studios Hollywood’s first, Halloween Horror Nights™ 1997 was only the start of its first era. Compared to what came before and would soon follow, it was a pared-down event, with only four mazes and two daytime attractions in operation. But between the introduction of Bill & Ted’s Halloween Adventure, the inclusion of proto-icon Cryptkeeper, and the liberal usage of Universal's horror backlog from Psycho to Shocker, the blueprint is plain to see. It was also the first year the tie-in Eyegore Awards were held. The first demon trophy went to Alice Cooper, beginning the Hollywood tradition of hard rock and horror.
