Though the zombies still took the spotlight, Halloween Horror Nights™ 2014 was all about new tricks and old dogs. An American Werewolf in London rose to the occasion, matching the Academy Award-winning special effects of its source material. AVP: Alien vs. Predator debuted as the event's most elaborate maze yet, filling an entire soundstage and requiring a two-year tenure to justify its cost. If the towering Alien Queen puppet was any indication, Hollywood was finally going Hollywood.
After year-upon-year of record-breaking attendance, another tent was added to the backlot, bringing the number of scratch-built mazes up to six, a record at the time. Counting the year-round walkthrough and the Terror Tram, Halloween Horror Nights™ Hollywood finally had as many haunted attractions as its East Coast cousin.
Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash began his creative relationship with the event in Clowns 3-D. Budgetary seams started to show with The Walking Dead: End of the Line, which reused most of the previous year’s sets, but the park-wide scope was undeniable. Though Universal’s House of Horrors officially closed on September 1st, 2014, it reopened as Face Off: In the Flesh for the event and was bulldozed not long after it ended.
