The Modern Era Begins With Prestige and Profanity

With The Walking Dead quietly confined to their own year-round haunted house, American Horror Story took over as the white-hot headliner, but the difference was in the back-up. Few horror movies are as notorious than The Exorcist and fewer still last decades as short-hand for unimaginable, cinematic terror. Its inclusion was more than another throwback to Halloween Horror Nights™, it was legitimacy and limitation. If they could get The Exorcist and adapt it into a maze, what couldn’t they get?

They did get the four biggest slashers in the business together for the first year ever. Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, and Michael Myers returned in fan favorite mazes. Krampus, the only modern tie-in besides American Horror Story, hit the horror-comedy sweet spot. Even the Terror Tram found new fans, courtesy of an original story from filmmaker Eli Roth.

Event Facts

  • For the only year since its inclusion in the event, the Parisian Courtyard was not used for a maze. Instead, for the first time, the WaterWorld extended queue housed the Upper Lot maze.
  • The scare zones were reduced to roving bands of Purge participants and the budgetary “black walls” started to show, but the net effect was positively absolute - Halloween Horror Nights™ would never be the same.
