According to the billboards, visitors asked for it. Ditching any pretense of family-friendliness after dark, Howl-O-Scream’s second year was its first in familiar shape. Five new haunted houses dotted the park, separated by scarezones left off the map for unsuspecting guests to find on their own. Fiends, the event’s long-running signature show, made its debut. Three new icons replaced the cartoonish Dr. Livingsdoom and established the event’s new style - the brutal Torment, the monstrous Mangler, and the seductive Pernicia Gloom. Spooky was out. Scary and sexy were in. But not too in. The year’s original slogan - “This Time, Terror Takes Control!” - was scrapped after the September 11th attacks, leading to a park-wide toning down of any sights, sounds, and scares deemed too intense.
