Howl-O-Scream had become a hit, but nobody realized how big it was, including Busch Gardens. On opening night, after park ops deemed overflow parking lots unnecessary, cars wrapped the property waiting to get in. Under the watchful eye sockets of the Death Spirit, visitors endured more haunted houses and scare zones than ever before. Escape from Insanity returned from the year prior with minor enhancements, beginning a Busch Gardens tradition of keeping and improving fan-favorite haunts. For the first time since the event’s 1999 founding, the Myombe Reserve trail that had been used as both a maze and scarezone was not used at all. The Mortuary, an early Howl-O-Scream staple based on the step-by-step burial process, made its debut.
