In lieu of a mascot, Howl-O-Scream found a philosophy - The Dark Side of the Gardens. It’s a tagline that the event would use intermittently in the years to come, inaugurated to summarize the omnipresent threat of a zombie apocalypse. After a year without roaming hordes, the event tried the other extreme - only roaming hordes. With no scare zones to keep the monsters contained, the entire park was open season. The only place guaranteed zombie-free was the returning nightclub, now relaxed to ages 18 and up. Three new haunted houses were added to the reduced line-up, only six standard houses as opposed to the previous year’s seven. Alone, 2010’s successful upcharge experiment, returned as an optional seventh house.
